Blockchain Trials: A mock up trial on Smart Contracts
Buzz or hype can fade as quickly as it rises: from Bitcoin to Blockchain to Distributed Ledgers to Smart Contracts to Distributed Apps…. Over the last few years, the media has often been swapping these words interchangeably capturing the imagination (or sometimes fears) of many. Blockchain advocates believe this emerging technology is here to stay, and that it has the potential to disrupt many, if not all, legacy systems, from financial institutions to insurance, from regulators to e-government.
But will the technology really be used for large-scale production systems or will it stay confined within R&D departments? And what is so smart about ‘smart contracts’?
An afternoon of constructive and rational debates is needed to separate hype from the facts regarding the true potential of Blockchain technologies for real-world applications. ‘Smart Contracts on Trial’ is the first-of-its-kind tech mock trial to be held at the European Parliament on June 29th.
Court will be made up of an impartial judge and two lawyers (a defender and a prosecutor). Each lawyer will call a few witnesses to the bar to talk in favor of or against smart contracts, both will ask questions to the witnesses and the judge will act as the moderator.
After the testimonials each lawyer will make their final statements before a Jury of 12 experts.
The question we are asking the jury is: Are smart contracts readily available to transform business processes? We want to analyze the real impact of blockchain and smart contracts for the Capital Markets Union initiative
Also in the morning we are organizing the “Digital Currency Summit, Blockchain for Capital Markets”, with BNP Paribas as our main sponsor and speakers from Swift, European Commission, BNP Paribas… This way we can also attract biggest experts on Blockchain in Europe to both events
